Peri’s Winkle Blues

This song takes me back to some of the great Bugaloos of Les McCann. We recorded this song live at the Quasimodo Jazz Club in Berlin, Germany on October 11th, 2002 as part of the Minor Music’s “Wir-JazzWunderkinder” tour. I wrote the tune over a long period of time, writing the first part maybe a year before I finished it. What I especially like about this take is Marcus Rieck’s fantastic drumming. Marcus grew up in a small town in Germany and his dad was always listening to some of the great groovy piano trios of the 50′s and 60′s (like Gene Harris and Three Sounds, Ramsey Lewis and Les McCann) so Marcus really learned to play these grooves at an early age. It is very rare to find a young drummer who likes to play these old “Blue Note” grooves, especially in Germany! I am very fortunate to be able to work with Marcus.
